What is Light & Vibration Therapy?

Light therapy is the application of light with specific wavelengths to the body for the purposes of influencing biology.  Red, near infrared as well as blue light are all delivered by way of laser and LED lights to support pelvic health.  As well, vibration therapy, delivered at various levels, may have positive effects on the female pelvis.

What conditions is light and vibration therapy useful?

  • Tearing and episiotomy recovery
  • Pelvic inflammation and congestion
  • Pelvic pain (painful intercourse)
  • Muscular weakness & prolapse
  • Incontinence

What are the benefits of light & vibration therapy postpartum?

Wound Healing

During pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum trauma, inflammation and congestion may occur in the pelvis.  Light therapy may increase blood flow in two ways: first, through a cellular process that dilates blood vessels, and second, through the synthesis of new blood vessels.  The increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to recovering tissues for quicker recovery and function.

Light therapy may also reduce inflammation and pain.  Studies have found that light therapy may affect levels of molecules associated with inflammation, such as prostaglandins.  Wound healing and reduced levels of pain and inflammation are critical to postpartum pelvic recovery.

Muscular Strength for Incontinence & Prolapse

Reduced and dysfunctional connective tissue are common outcomes of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum owing to the shift in hormone levels as well as potential trauma during birth.  Light therapy increases cellular energy production and supports connective tissue production.  This creates a shift towards tissue rejuvenation rather than breakdown, which may also support muscular strengthening.

Increased cellular energy, muscular support, and strength are necessary to address issues such as incontinence and prolapse, which are common postpartum.

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain, most notable during intercourse (called dyspareunia), can occur during pregnancy and postpartum for a variety of reasons, especially tension or overactive pelvic floor muscles. This is referred to as muscle hypertonicity. Light and vibration therapy can be very effective in reducing tension and pain in the pelvic floor muscles through several mechanisms, including increasing energy production in cells, and inducing relaxation through the gentle heat generated by infrared light.  Additionally, very low level vibration therapy works to reduce tension in muscles.  This combination can be very affective for hypertonic and painful muscles of the pelvis.

How to integrate light therapy into your postpartum recovery

In a comfortable position, using a water-based lubricant, the pelvic wand can be used internally by inserting it into the vagina to a comfortable level. It can also be used externally by placing it gently against the external genital tissues.

The Fringe Pelvic Wand delivers both light (red and near infrared) and vibration. Select the desired light mode (red and near infrared, blue, or red only) and/or vibration mode (low, moderate, moderate/high, or high frequency).  Gradually work up to the recommended time of 10 min/day.  For optimal results, use light therapy (with or without vibration) 3-7x/ week.

Conclusion

Each woman’s journey through pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery is unique.  Light and vibration therapy delivered through a pelvic wand is an asset to any woman’s recovery.
